with agriculture that excites.

Today, climate change and a shortage of people to carry on farming are slowly changing what we take for granted at our tables. Driven by a wish to protect a future I hold dear, I have worked on environmental issues myself—yet before challenges this vast, I have keenly felt the limits of the change one person alone can bring about.

Even so, what could we do for the future? Continuing to ask that question, I arrived at “food,” essential to human life, and the “agriculture” that sustains it. Convinced that updating today’s high-impact agriculture—its heavy water use, soil contamination from agrochemicals, and greenhouse-gas emissions—could make a profound difference for the future, I took on the launch of MUGEN FARM.

Some may picture plant factories and hydroponics as sterile, perhaps inferior to natural cultivation in taste and quality. Yet once I worked in the field myself, I was struck by how vegetables whose innate potential is drawn out through precise environmental control can far exceed expectations in flavor and quality. At the same time, the more we pursue the ideal environment, the more respect I feel for the power of the nature that has nurtured these plants, and for the meticulous work of the human hands that have long supported farming.

Technology is not a replacement for nature or the human hand. To deeply understand and recreate the earthly conditions in which vegetables grow delicious and fine—that is the technology we aim for.

This beautiful, precious food culture, these vegetable seeds, and this agriculture—built over long years within Japan’s rich nature and culture. Our mission is to keep them from being lost and, harnessing technology, to carry this baton to the future. Not merely to grow crops, but to create food that makes people think, “It’s delicious—I want to keep eating it,” and to pass it to the next generation. Returning to society the knowledge newly gained at MUGEN FARM, we will build a sustainable cycle of food.
